Project J:COM on Demand

Year 2019 - 2021

Agency KKStrea Ltd.

Client J:COM

Building the brand new video streaming service for the biggest content provider in Japan, we deep dove into the market, learnt their pattern and behavior, and designed the product that suits the Japanese market.

UX Designed for Galapagosisation

J:COM is one of the biggest cable companies in Japan, whose audience covers people from all ages. Therefore designing a modern simple look wasn’t the only mission, we still had to care for usability and most of the time psychology.

Insecurity of information

Studies have shown that Japanese people tend to have more patience for reading, and in fact, they feel insecure when they get too little information from reading. Therefore there is always the balance to show all information and trim it.

Unique habits

Japan has developed their own business environment where most models in the west don’t really fit well. During the process we had to interview Japanese partners and users to ensure our design fit their habits.

Complex business structure

In Japan there are a lot of unspoken rules in the product’s service system that form the product. We then had to comb the system, find the stakeholders, and help them all feel comfortable with the new product’s system.

Designed for complexity

J:COM on Demand is a very huge service which includes tons of content of all kinds. Each viewer goes on this service for a different purpose. So we asked the most important question: what did they suffer from when they used the old system? The answer is simple. They don’t know where to start and which content is available for them. Therefore we redesigned the whole system and structure. We made a section where all the content is available, where other content is based on to be recommended in order to increase the viewing time.

Complex business model

Each content can have multiple ways to be ordered. It can be purchased, rented, packaged and purchased, packaged and rented, or even come with a cable plan. Designing the data flow and the nuser flow is the most important task other than presenting content. We tried and tested the old product and interviewed some users. We came up with a flow that can help users to make an order without being confused.
